About Richard Raul Photography
When I was growing up in San Diego in the late 50’s and early 60’s our family enjoyed many camping trips to the Eastern High Sierra Mountains to a site in the foothills just west of “Lone Pine”, California, which is now called the “Mt. Whitney Portal”. It was there that my appreciation for the beauty of mountains and an emotional bond with the surrounding landscape began.
After moving to Los Angles for a couple of years in the late 60’s we relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico where I graduated from high school in 1971. After some time working in the construction industry, living in Oregon and a couple of years in college I moved to Denver in 1976 to enroll in the music program at Metro State College. To support myself through school I worked part time as a beginner pressman at various local prints shops quickly learning the basic technical aspects of "process photography" which was an integral part of the offset printing method. A few years after trading the college music program for a full time career in the printing industry I accepted a full time position with a printing press manufacturing company at their Colorado regional headquarters as a printing and press operator trainer.
By 1982 I owned a new commercial printing business. It was then that my mechanical and technical skills were refined to produce a high quality image. Over the next 25 years the love for landscape photography grew and developed into more than just a hobby. In 2007 the print shop doors closed for the last time and a career in landscape photography began. I took an interest in other forms of photography too but landscape remains my favorite.
With today's technology and a healthy dose of dedication and patience the emotional connection with a beautiful landscape scene can be realized and thoroughly expressed through a photograph. So many times the scene before me is so spectacular there are no words to describe the beauty. That is the moment I love sharing and hopefully bring a sense of “being there” to others. Living in Colorado and the Southwest we are surrounded with an abundance of beautiful scenes at any time of the year. It is my goal to share as many of those as possible.
